Statistics say that single women are happier, and more fulfilled socially, in life than married women. (I’ll substantiate this later.)
The reason, they claim, is because single women work more at creating a social female network and therefore have more valued friends than those with a husband (and kids?).
Last night we had a girls dinner. Triple A whipped us up some Mojito (Mo-hee-to) chicken (a Dino BBQ special) and we got out the wine and Tostitos (a tradition for dinners with our Français fille) and chowed and chat.
JMay and my plans to be productive disintegrated as we refilled our wine glasses and dove deeper into our life troubles—and riled Max up.
It was one of the most content evenings I’ve had in a long time.
Twenty years ago, my second grade teacher told my mom, ‘Elizabeth will never have a big group of friends, but always one or two close girlfriends.’ She had me pegged: I’ve always had a “bff” to listen to all my stories and deal with all my tears. But when I needed to hang out mindlessly, I always turned to the guys.
Yet, over the past few years, as I was working my way through college and grad school, kick starting my career and attempting to navigate my love life, I had accummulated a wonderful group of girlfriends. And now when I have some juicy gossip or need an ear to persevere through my moaning, I don’t know who to call first.
And what’s even more special is that thanks to my persistent attempts to intermingle my different [groups of] friends, they all know each other an get along beautifully! (At least they appear to! They could be full of BS!)
I am still a female so of course a part of me would like to have a male counterpart alongside me at times, but I feel very content that if the male species was magically erased from the planet this weekend, we’d all be ok and fulfilled.
(And although there were only four of us at the table last night, reminiscences of last weekend at K’s and the anticipation of Mel’s visit next week have contributed a significant amount of inspiration to this.)
So let’s hear it for the girls!!
(You girls better bloody comment on this one! Grrrrrrrr….)
